University of Nebraska Surplus Ebay Sales was started in 2001 as a way to provide goods no longer useful to the University to the general public. Rather than gathering dust in warehouses, now valuable equipment can be useful again to public buyers and recover significant revenue to the University.
The way in which this process works is as follows: when departments of the University have equipment that is no longer useful, they first must try to sell the item to buyers within the University (on our NUAuction System). If the item is unsuccessful within NUAuction, sellers can choose to have us try to sell the item on Ebay. We then work closely with department which supplied the item for the duration of the auction--from the first listing to the final shipment of the item.
As any other department of any university, we are a not-for-profit department. This enables us to operate on a cost-recovery basis. Any net profit we are left with at the end of the year is returned to the departments which we sold for that year.
